First update video

I made a video of what I was up to for facebook:

It’s time I posted some of the stuff I’ve been working on, the eventual goal is to make a game.

And in response to some questions:

the purpose of these continents is really to put a boundary on the erosion simulation (when you see me waiting for grey boxes to become drawn, that’s some land that hasn’t finished eroding yet), the continents are more like islands that fit together. Depending on game requirements they could be joined up after the erosion sim (using hacks) to make a larger landmass, but distinct landmasses gated by requiring a boat to reach will probably work well.

There’s a mountain generator in there, and its purpose is to fake initial conditions for alps, faults and glaciers (what you would get from plates moving). That part is very fake - just using noise at the moment, but it’s also what I was meaning at the end when I mentioned the genericism and said it’s not limited to that. Eventually different types of continents would use different systems for generating the starting landform, but I imagine those will be driven by game biomes rather than by making a deeper geology sim. What I currently have in mind will be 3D in 1st/3rd person, not viewed from above, so the goal is to get backdrop scenery that’s beautiful at the [compressed] 1st-person scale - lakes, rivers, mountains, passes etc. (And yeah, producing ridges more than mountains is a problem)
